We have learned of dark matter,
black holes, and the birth of stars,
Whole galaxies inside of
galaxies,
And universes beyond the reach of
space and time.
We have gathered fragments of our
consciousness
And sifted them to substances
below
The ken of comprehension, and
drawn conclusions
No priestesses in ancient temples
ever dreamed.
We have struggled in our sleep to
escape the fears
That drove our parents to despair
and chased
Our ancestors into the labyrinths
of death
And feared to awaken when the
shaking earth called out.
We have falsified our hopes and
made up realities,
Rationalized interpretations,
denied ourselves,
And written preposterous lines of
poetry for you.
